Diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine. The good news is, it is manageable!
Once you get the news that your pet has diabetes, it is our goal to help both you and your pet through it. Treatment options vary case to case, but there are exercise and dietary options, as well as insulin therapy. Whatever your pet needs, we will educate you on the disease, coach you through the treatment and update you on the prognosis.
Follow up care with a diabetic pet is imperative. It can take a few weeks or months of checking their blood sugar to get your pet regulated on the correct dosage of insulin. Once they are responding correctly, we won’t need to check it quite as often and can space out their visits a bit more.
If you have any questions about diabetes or you think your pet might need to be tested, feel free to contact us today at (562) 592 - 1391.
